Tuesday 3 September 2013 – in windy Hervey Bay

We were up before 7 this morning for some obscure reason. There were a couple of showers in the night, and today was overcast for the majority, and though the temperature was in the low 20’s (maybe 23), the very gusty wind was quite cool, so I didn’t do much sitting outside today – even Grant was inside for a couple of hours.

After breakfast, shower, etc, we went for a walk on the beach, leaving camp at about a quarter to ten.  It was actually not too bad on the beach, and along about a km or so, the beach seemed to be a bit sheltered from the strong winds.  We walked for about 45 minutes until we reached one of the big drainage pipes which are scattered along the beach, where I decided I would sit on the pipe while Grant continued on a bit further.

During this part of the walk we came across a NZ couple from our camp – he (Gary) having been born in Onehunga like Grant.  We talked to them for about five minutes then continued on.  Now I think Grant was on a bit of a mission to get around a small bend in the coastline, which is just a bit too far for me.  Anyway, he walked on, and was back in about fifteen minutes, mission achieved,  when we started heading back home.

Half way back we stopped off at the kiosk for a hot chocolate and a cappuccino, and got back at round midday.  We sat outside with a cuppa and a book – me for about five minutes ‘cos I was cold, and Grant for quite a bit longer.  As the afternoon went on I got really cold, and wonder if I am catching something as Ray and Lauris have had a lurgy of some sort.  I was reading and embellishing my sock dolls for a while, then I went and had a lay down on the bed and went to sleep for over an hour.  When I woke up I felt somewhat better, though I changed into my trackie pants and windcheater – much warmer.

So as one of our fellow caravanners said today – there’s not much to do that’s pleasurable when the wind is bad like it was today.  It seems to have eased a bit now, so we’ll see what tomorrow turns on for us, though the forecast is for 22 degrees, cloudy with no patches of sunshine.

Late this afternoon I started to map out where we might make our stops on the way home, and for how long at each place. We intend to drive up to Bundaberg on Thursday – looks like the best day of the week before next Saturday, and will leave here on Sunday, southward bound.
