Saturday 8 September – Well when we woke up this morning the
wind had dropped totally, so it was quite warm when we were packing up the van
to move on. We left the park at ten past
eight and drove the 120 km to get back onto the Brand Highway at the Overlander
Roadhouse, then turned south to Kalbarri.
Today’s drive was to give us several sightings of emus and a few goats. When we saw our first couple of emus I
commented to Grant that emus were the one thing we hadn’t seen as road kill,
and would you believe – not half an hour later there it was – the first emu
roadkill, which as the journey progressed was joined by two more deceased
emus. How strange was that!
Once we turned off the Brand Highway onto the scenic route
drive into Kalbarri, we were treated to some lovely scenery – in one part, the first
grass paddocks since we left Port Germein a couple of days after leaving home, then
more bush with taller gum trees and ever increasing numbers of wildflowers are
starting to appear. The sides of the road looked as if they had been planted with
an avenue of colourful natives – very pretty.
Some of today’s wildflowers.
We arrived in Kalbarri at
ten past one, so drove for almost five hours today – less a cuppa stop.
Once here we were
allocated our site and found that we are only six doors away from Ross and Dot
Herbert – friends of Alan and Janine - who are also over here for next week’s
wedding. So after we got set up and had
lunch we went and visited them for a couple of hours. Ross went out on a fishing trip yesterday and
caught a decent fish, so we are having a barbie tea with them tomorrow night –
they are bringing the fish and I’m bringing the salad.
So that’s been about it
for today, now we will go through the literature we have gathered on Kalbarri
and decide what we will do tomorrow.
There seems to be plenty of options, so we’ll have to make our decision
carefully.
